Nio, a Chinese electric car company, recently unveiled its new, lower-priced brand called Onvo. The first car under this brand, the L60 SUV, is priced at 219,900 yuan (US$30,439) which is approximately $4,000 cheaper than Tesla’s Model Y. Deliveries for the L60 SUV are scheduled to start in September, with pre- already underway following the launch event. Nio’s CEO, William Li, mentioned that the company plans to eventually sell Onvo cars overseas, although no specific timeline was provided.

The entry of Onvo into the electric car market adds to the already intense competition in China. By offering a more affordable option compared to Tesla, Onvo aims to attract a wider customer base. Other companies like Xiaomi have also entered the market with electric car that compete on price. Xiaomi’s SU7 sedan, for example, is positioned as a rival to Tesla’s Model 3 and is priced similarly, creating more choices for consumers.

Nio’s CEO, William Li, confirmed that the L60 SUV utilizes lower-priced batteries from BYD, a major Chinese automaker. The Biden administration’s decision to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles entering the U.S. market adds another layer of complexity to the competition. Nio, along with other Chinese EV manufacturers, will have to navigate these new tariffs which could impact their ability to expand internationally. Despite this challenge, the Chinese electric car industry continues to grow rapidly and gain traction in both domestic and international markets.

Onvo’s president, Alan Ai, emphasized the brand’s vision to set a new standard for family cars during the launch event. The name “On Voyage” reflects the brand’s focus on creating enjoyable experiences for families, while the Chinese name “Le Dao” conveys a sense of togetherness and happiness. Ai highlighted the spacious interior, superior shock absorption, and advanced driving range of the L60 SUV when compared to competitors like Tesla’s Model Y and Toyota’s Rav4. Onvo’s emphasis on technological innovation and driving enhancements positions the brand as a serious contender in the electric car market.
