Spirit Airlines, known for its budget air travel options, is now making a strategic shift in its offerings to include premium services with its highest-priced tickets. This move comes as the airline faces challenges such as the aftermath of a failed takeover, engine recalls, an oversupplied domestic market, and competition from larger rivals.
The new service categories introduced by Spirit Airlines include “Go Big,” “Go Comfy,” “Go Savvy,” and “Go.” The “Go Big” tickets will provide passengers with a seat in the airline’s Big Front Seats, along with free Wi-Fi, a checked bag, cabin luggage, and complimentary snacks and drinks. On the other hand, “Go Comfy” offers extra space with a blocked middle seat, earlier boarding, snacks, beverages, and baggage allowances. The “Go Savvy” fares come with a choice between a checked bag or a carry-on, while the “Go” option includes only the basic seat with additional fees for services like checked bags, Wi-Fi, and snacks.
Competing with Industry Rivals
Spirit Airlines is now competing with larger airline rivals like United by providing both budget-friendly and premium options to cater to cost-conscious travelers as well as those seeking a more premium experience. CEO Ted Christie mentioned that the airline was ceding other markets to competitors and is now focused on offering a variety of choices to attract a wider customer base.
Earlier this month, Spirit Airlines reported a wider-than-expected loss due to lower-than-anticipated nonticket revenue collected through fees. The airline has also warned pilots about potential furloughs in the near future. To increase revenue, Spirit Airlines is now offering upmarket seats and additional services to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
Spirit Airlines is not the only carrier looking to introduce premium services to attract more customers. Southwest Airlines recently announced plans to offer “premium” seats with increased legroom, marking a significant change in its operational strategy. Additionally, Frontier Airlines has also started offering blocked middle seats at the front of the plane for a higher price to appeal to travelers seeking more space and comfort.
Spirit Airlines’ shift towards offering premium travel options reflects the changing landscape of the airline industry. By providing a range of services from budget to premium, the airline aims to appeal to a wider audience and increase revenue. As the airline continues to evolve its offerings, it will be interesting to see how it competes with industry rivals and adapts to the demands of modern travelers.
